In a significant ruling, a Washington D.C. federal judge, Tanya Chutkan, has barred former President Donald Trump from publicly targeting Jack Smith, prosecutors, court personnel, their families, or witnesses in the election interference case.
The judge emphasized that First Amendment rights must yield to the administration of justice and witness protection. She stated, “His presidential candidacy does not grant him unrestricted liberty to vilify public servants just doing their jobs.”
This decision followed a substantial hearing in a federal court in Washington, D.C., where Smith’s legal team sought limitations on Trump’s statements about the case brought by the Justice Department. Prosecutors had previously urged Judge Chutkan to impose an order preventing the former president from making “extrajudicial statements that present a serious and substantial danger of materially prejudicing this case,” as reported by CBS News.
