On Monday, Edison Ehie was elected as the new Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly (RSHA). His appointment followed the suspension of key officers and the impeachment of his predecessor, Martins Amaehule, by a majority vote of 26 assembly members.
Addressing the press shortly after taking office, Speaker Ehie expressed his gratitude to his colleagues for their confidence in his leadership. He vowed to carry out his duties impartially, emphasizing the values of equity, justice, and fairness.
Ehie made a commitment to the people of Rivers, stating, “I will ensure that I act justly and fairly towards all. The rule of law will be upheld during my tenure, and I will remain loyal to my colleagues, our constituents, and the independence of the Rivers State House of Assembly, fostering mutual respect for the judiciary and executive branches of government.”
He also assured a fair hearing for suspended members through the Committee on Petitions.
Additionally, the Speaker announced that the House had adjourned sine die, following a circular issued by the Parliamentary Staff Association of Nigeria (PASAN), who had commenced an indefinite nationwide strike. (NAN)
