An alleged incursion attempt by a unit of the Cameroonian armed forces, known as the Rapid d’Intervention Battalions (BIR), into the Atabong East communities within the Idabato subdivision of the Bakassi Peninsula has reportedly been foiled by separatist militants pledging allegiance to the Biafra Nations League (BnL).
The incident unfolded around 4 pm on October 31, marking a troubling episode in the region.
The Dragon Fighter Marine, a faction associated with BnL, has claimed responsibility for the defensive counterattack against the BIR, which is considered an elite force under the command of the Cameroonian President. Tragically, three Cameroonian soldiers lost their lives in the ensuing shootout.
The Biafra separatist group is said to be active in the border regions of the Bakassi Peninsula.
Sources indicate that the confrontation over control of Idabato was relatively brief, lasting less than half an hour, during which the BIR was compelled to retreat from the area.
The Cameroonian casualties appear to be a result of an ambush, as the militant group launched their attack from a concealed position.
As of the latest reports, Nigerian authorities have not issued an official response to this developing situation. The incident raises concerns about the stability and security of the region and calls for a swift and diplomatic resolution to the tensions at hand.
