Rivers State Governor, Simi Fubara, has extended his apologies to the residents of the state following the recent political disturbances arising from his conflicts with his predecessor and Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike.
Rivers State was engulfed in chaos on October 30, 2023, when a large crowd of Fubara’s supporters gathered at the state House of Assembly complex to prevent lawmakers from allegedly attempting to impeach the governor.
However, pandemonium broke out when the governor arrived to assess the damage caused by a bombing incident at the premises the previous night. Security forces deployed to restore order fired water canisters and tear gas at the crowd, intensifying the turmoil.
The chaotic scene garnered national attention, prompting President Bola Tinubu to intervene and mediate between Fubara and his predecessor, aiming to restore peace in the South-South state.
In a statement titled ‘Peace is Priceless,’ released to the press on November 4, 2023, Fubara described the recent political crisis as “regrettable anxieties” and emphasized the importance of making sacrifices for the sake of peace.
Fubara expressed his gratitude to President Tinubu for his timely intervention, which initiated communication channels aimed at resolving the crisis. He stated, “My actions are aimed at restoring peace and stability in our state, and no sacrifice is too great to achieve this objective.” Fubara also urged all parties involved, including himself and his predecessor, to work collectively to advance the progress, security, and well-being of the people of Rivers State.
He concluded by assuring the people of Rivers State that peace would prevail, and they would continue to collaborate to promote the state’s peace, security, and progress. Fubara apologized to the residents of Rivers State for the recent anxieties and expressed his gratitude for their support and prayers.
