Multichoice Nigeria, the Pay-TV operator, has revealed a second round of price increases for its DStv and GOtv packages in 2023.
The adjustments, slated to take effect on November 6, 2023, mark a notable escalation of at least 19% in subscription fees across all bouquets. This comes just five months after the previous rate adjustment.
In a communication to its subscribers, Multichoice cited the rationale behind these price modifications as being linked to “escalating costs across various aspects of our business, including content acquisition, infrastructure maintenance, and operational expenses.” Additionally, the company pointed to the “current economic challenges in Nigeria,” which encompass soaring inflation rates and a depreciating naira.
The revised prices for DStv packages are as follows:
• Premium: N29,500 (+20%)
• Compact+: N19,800 (+19%)
• Compact: N12,500 (+19%)
• Confam: N7,400 (+19%)
• Yanga: N4,200 (+20%)
The adjusted prices for GOtv packages are as follows:
• Supa Plus: N12,500 (+19%)
• Supa: N7,600 (+19%)
• Max: N5,700 (+19%)
• Jolli: N3,950 (+19%)
• Jinja: N2,700 (+20%)
These price modifications have evoked diverse reactions among subscribers. Some have expressed frustration, contending that the increases come at a time of financial hardship for many Nigerians.
On the other hand, some subscribers have defended Multichoice, acknowledging the need for price adjustments to sustain the delivery of high-quality programming and cover operational expenses.
The impact of these price hikes on Multichoice’s subscriber base remains uncertain. While the company has not released recent subscriber data, it’s plausible that some subscribers may seek out more affordable pay-TV alternatives or consider canceling their subscriptions.
