A British-based doctor who had been working in Gaza during the latest conflict has successfully returned to the UK.
Dr. Abdelkader Hammad, a surgeon at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital, had been on a mission at Al Shifa hospital in Gaza City, a place he had frequently visited over the past decade. However, shortly after his arrival, violence erupted when Hamas militants launched deadly attacks on October 7.
Dr. Hammad had initially hoped to leave Gaza earlier in the week, but complications at the Rafah border crossing delayed his departure.
Finally, on Thursday, he was able to cross into Egypt and then fly back to Heathrow from Cairo.
Upon his arrival, Dr. Hammad expressed his overwhelming relief, saying, ‘It’s a big relief to see my wife and my sons here. It’s been four weeks waiting for this moment to happen… At some stage I wasn’t sure that this would happen.'”
