The UGMC Heart Centre at the University of Ghana Medical Centre has achieved a milestone by performing the first-ever Off-Pump Coronary Artery Bypass surgeries in Ghana.
Two patients, part of a group of six undergoing intricate cardiac procedures, were successfully treated for severe coronary artery disease.
The surgeries, conducted on beating hearts, involved connecting arteries to address blockages.
Notable surgeons involved include Prof Enoch Akowuah, Dr Baffoe Gyan, Dr Gordon Offei-Larbi, and Prof Andrew Owens, with anesthesia managed by Dr Ernest Ofosu Appiah.
The cases highlight modifiable risk factors like hypertension and high cholesterol, emphasizing preventive measures such as screening, exercise, and maintaining a healthy weight to counter coronary artery disease.
