Pope Francis recently hosted a luncheon at Vatican City to observe the Catholic Church’s World Day of the Poor.
The event, held on Sunday, November 19, welcomed 1,200 impoverished individuals, including approximately 120 transgender women from Torvaianica, south of Rome, many of whom were Latin American migrants working as sex workers.
Among the attendees was Claudia Victoria Salas, a 55-year-old transgender tailor and cleaner from Argentina, who expressed gratitude, saying, “This is a fantastic opportunity for us trans individuals.”
Another guest, Jessica Quintero, highlighted the significance of the event for the often overlooked transgender community, stating, “It’s beautiful for us trans [women] because we are forgotten.”
