Tensions persisted in Sierra Leone’s capital on Monday as a 24-hour curfew shifted to a dusk-to-dawn lockdown.
President Juulius Madda Bio announced the arrest of most leaders involved in weekend attacks on the main military barracks and prisons.
Despite the relaxed curfew, Free Town business owners incurred losses on Sunday.
Gunfire erupted as attackers targeted the country’s largest military barracks, engaging in a prolonged exchange with security forces.
Detention centers, including the central prison, were also assaulted, resulting in the release or abduction of an unconfirmed number of individuals.
The attackers’ identities and motives remain unknown, with no claims of responsibility.
The army reported 13 soldiers killed, and authorities are seeking both retired and active military personnel in connection with the incident.
Sierra Leone has been on edge since widespread protests in mid-August last year.
