The Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference (GCBC) has endorsed the Promotion of Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill, commonly known as the anti-LGBTQI+ bill.
While affirming the bill’s alignment with Catholic teachings and the moral values of the Ghanaian population, the GCBC emphasized the importance of protecting LGBTQI+ individuals’ fundamental rights.
The bishops called for respect, compassion, and sensitivity towards the LGBTQI+ community, asserting that any form of harassment is unacceptable.
The statement follows Cardinal Peter Appiah Turkson’s stance that homosexuality should not be a criminal offense, emphasizing the need for better understanding.
Currently under consideration by Parliament, the anti-LGBTQ+ bill aims to criminalize LGBTQ+ activities while providing support for children and individuals involved in LGBTQ+ issues.
