University of Calabar (UNICAL) students rallied on the streets in opposition to a tuition fee increase of over 100 percent.
The university’s management, after an emergency meeting, announced the upward review starting from the 2022/2023 and 2023/2024 academic sessions.
Freshers, returning, and final year non-science students are now required to pay N111,000, N91,500, and N114,000, respectively, with additional third-party dues.
Science students face increased fees of N155,000, N125,000, and N148,000.
Protesting with placards, students demanded a reversal of the decision, causing traffic disruptions in Calabar.
The management cited economic realities for the fee hike, emphasizing the need to uphold the university’s academic standards.
