On December 5, 2023, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA) entered into a significant four-year Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).
Signed by President Dr. Omar Alieu Touray of the ECOWAS Commission and Mr. Sulemana Braimah, Executive Director of the MFWA, the MoU aims to strengthen collaboration in areas such as democratic values, media freedom, human rights, and regional peace.
Specific cooperative efforts include building media capacity, countering extremist narratives, promoting freedom of expression, and increasing awareness of ECOWAS activities across Member States.
The ECOWAS Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace, and Security highlighted the vital role of the MFWA in addressing regional challenges, emphasizing the media’s influence in supporting democratic values.
The Executive Director of the MFWA expressed enthusiasm about the formalized partnership, recognizing the opportunity to address critical challenges collaboratively.
The signing ceremony was attended by senior ECOWAS officials and MFWA staff.
