The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) reported 13 confirmed cases of dengue fever in Sokoto State, with the outbreak detected in November.
The Director-General, Ifedayo Adetifa, mentioned that 71 suspected cases and 13 confirmed cases were reported in three LGAs, emphasizing that there have been no recorded deaths.
The majority of suspected cases fall between 21-40 years old.
Adetifa noted a moderate risk level and highlighted the country’s preparedness based on experience from past outbreaks, including Ebola in 2014 and Lassa fever.
Dengue fever is a viral infection transmitted through mosquito bites, prevalent in tropical climates.
Adetifa assured adequate capacity to respond effectively and announced plans to optimize existing testing facilities for dengue diagnosis.
So far, no death has been recorded from the outbreak.
