The Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy (FMCIDE) in Nigeria, in partnership with the UK-based Raspberry Pi Foundation, has unveiled the Build-a-Thon initiative.
This project aims to introduce senior secondary school students to the maker culture and encourage early adoption of technology.
Dr. Bosun Tijani, the Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, explained, “The Build-A-Thon initiative is part of our strategic plan to promote early technology adoption to shape tomorrow’s innovation leaders.”
Scheduled for four days in January 2024, the Build-A-Thon program will engage 1,500 students from 150 schools in Owerri, Maiduguri, and Abeokuta.
Participants will undergo an immersive learning experience, fostering critical thinking, teamwork, and problem-solving skills as they collaborate on innovative projects.
Outstanding teams at each location will receive recognition in various categories, including the most innovative design, the most sustainable project, and an award for the most utility-driven project.
The program’s overarching objectives include showcasing innovative projects, acknowledging achievements, fostering future collaborations, inspiring potential leaders, and promoting lifelong learning.
Build-A-Thon constitutes a comprehensive learning ecosystem, incorporating technology labs, DIY boxes, and workshops to enhance students’ skills in areas such as 3D printing, embedded systems, artificial intelligence, and the Internet of Things.
