A women’s college in Indiana, St. Mary’s College, has reversed its decision to allow transgender applicants, citing a loss of trust and unintentional division.
The college’s president, Katie Conboy, acknowledged the concerns and announced a return to the previous policy of accepting only biological women.
The initial change, allowing transgender applicants, had faced backlash from various perspectives, including accusations of diluting the college’s mission and threatening its Catholic identity.
Despite the reversal, Conboy defended the inclusive policy, expressing a commitment to ongoing dialogue and understanding within the community.
The decision followed discussions with Bishop Kevin C. Rhoades, who argued that the policy departure conflicted with Catholic teachings.
The move received both support and criticism, with some alumni halting donations and others applauding the return to the original admission policy.
