Officials reported that the Coast Guard responded to a passenger falling off the ‘Vision of the Seas’ cruise ship around 7:17 pm on Sunday, 127 miles east of Charleston, South Carolina.
Despite an extensive search involving two C-130 Hercules planes, the Coast Guard called off the rescue mission on Monday morning.
The missing passenger, unidentified, fell during the ‘8 Night Bahamas & Perfect Day Holiday Cruise,’ which departed from Baltimore on Friday.
Witnesses described the somber atmosphere as passengers aided the search efforts.
The cruise continues through the Caribbean, set to return to Baltimore on Saturday.
The ‘Vision of the Seas’ has a capacity of 2,000 passengers and 700 crew, according to the company’s website.
