The US military reported intercepting a drone and missile launched by Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen on Thursday.
The USS Mason, a guided missile destroyer, successfully downed the threats in the Southern Red Sea, with no damage to the surrounding ships or injuries reported.
This marks the 22nd attempted attack by Houthis on international shipping since October 19.
In response to escalating threats, the Pentagon initiated Operation Prosperity Guardian last week to counter Houthi actions in the Red Sea.
Despite Houthi claims of targeting Israeli ships, attacks have impacted non-Israeli vessels, prompting shipping companies to alter routes.
The Red Sea and Gulf of Aden, crucial for global trade, witness 10% of annual trade flow.
The US has now thwarted at least 17 Houthi-launched drones and missiles since the mission’s inception.
Additionally, on Thursday, the US imposed sanctions on an individual and exchange houses allegedly involved in Iranian financing for the Houthi rebels in Yemen.
