Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, has declared a one-week mourning period from January 1 to 8, 2024, to honor the 400 individuals who lost their lives between April and June 2023 and the over 160 victims of the recent Christmas Eve attacks.
In a New Year’s Day broadcast, Governor Mutfwang announced that flags would be flown at half-mast, urging citizens to engage in fervent prayers against the forces that have targeted the state.
He requested Muslim clerics to hold special prayers on Friday, January 5, 2024, and Christian clergy to designate Sunday, January 7, 2024, for prayers focused on lasting peace for the Plateau.
The governor emphasized that the attacks on villages were premeditated acts of criminality, insurgency, and terrorism, stressing the importance of addressing them as such to halt the senseless destruction of lives and property.
