Iran has taken responsibility for missile strikes near the US consulate in Iraq’s Kurdish region, targeting alleged spy headquarters and anti-Iranian terrorist groups in Erbil. This resulted in the death of four civilians and injuries to six others.
The US facilities, including the new consulate building and the troop base in Erbil International Airport, were unharmed according to a US official.
Among the casualties, local businessman Pershraw Dizayi and his family members were killed, along with former deputy speaker Hemin Hawrami.
Rockets hit the homes of a multimillionaire with ties to the Kurdish ruler and a senior Kurdish intelligence official.
Additionally, a Kurdish intelligence center was struck, as reported by Iraqi security sources.
Iraqi Kurdish Prime Minister Masrour Barzani condemned the rocket strikes as a “crime against the Kurdish people.”
Despite no damage to US facilities, an Iranian-backed Iraqi militia official claimed that 10 missiles fell in the affluent area near the new consulate.
The US defense official suggested the missiles were “reckless and imprecise.”
Iran, in a statement claiming responsibility, said they targeted the headquarters of Israel’s Mossad intelligence agency in response to recent atrocities.
The Revolutionary Guards vowed to continue offensive operations until avenging the killing of Guards members in Syria last month.
Simultaneously, the Guards reported striking “terrorist operations,” including Islamic State targets in Syria.
These events unfold amid concerns that tensions from the Israel-Hamas conflict could spill over into other parts of the region.
