Tanzania has issued a public advisory urging preventive measures in response to the red eye disease outbreak.
The Director of Medical Services, Prof Pascal Ruggajo, disclosed that the disease, also known as conjunctivitis, has affected Dar es Salaam, Coast, and Dodoma regions.
He emphasized precautions like refraining from touching eyes, regular handwashing, and maintaining overall hygiene to curb further transmission.
Prof Ruggajo, a consultant nephrologist, highlighted the lack of specific treatment for the disease, suggesting it typically resolves within two to six weeks.
He cautioned against using unverified medications and emphasized government monitoring and hygiene practices to mitigate the spread.
Cases have surged, with Dar es Salaam reporting 869 cases compared to 17 in December 2023, though no fatalities have been reported.
