UNICEF has raised concerns about a cholera outbreak in Africa spanning at least 10 countries.
The situation in Zambia and Zimbabwe is described as “very serious,” with over 200,000 reported cases and 3,000 lives lost.
Dr. Paul Ngwakum attributes the crisis to poor water sanitation, changing weather patterns, and delayed care-seeking behavior.
Children, especially those under 15, are disproportionately affected.
Zambia and Zimbabwe have seen a rapid rise in cases since the holidays, with a weekly report of 1,000 cholera cases in each country.
The fatality rate exceeds the acceptable threshold, prompting calls for international aid to contain the outbreak.
