A coalition of forty-eight Nigerian civil society organizations is urging President Bola Tinubu to declare a state of emergency due to the country’s worsening security challenges.
The group held a press conference in Abuja on Monday, citing recent incidents such as the killing of 43 people in Plateau State and numerous kidnappings in Abuja as reasons for immediate action.
Auwal Musa, representing the organizations, reported 2,423 deaths and 1,872 abductions between May 2023 and January 26, 2024.
Despite the police launching a specialized squad against kidnappings, the coalition emphasizes the need for a broader approach and the declaration of a state of emergency.
