The scheduled auction of Nelson Mandela’s artifacts, including iconic items like his Ray-Ban sunglasses and “Madiba” shirts, has been temporarily halted following widespread criticism and a court application by the South African Heritage Resources Agency (SAHRA).
The agency seeks to appeal a previous court judgment allowing the auction, asserting that these cultural heritage artifacts should be preserved for future generations rather than sold.
The items were set to be auctioned by Guernsey’s auction house, with proceeds intended for the construction of the Mandela Memorial Garden in Qunu, where Mandela is buried.
