Aleksander Ceferin, UEFA’s chairman overseeing European football, announced on Thursday that despite having the legal option, he won’t seek reelection in 2027 due to family commitments.
In office since 2016, he introduced a 12-year presidential term limit but secured a second term in 2019 and a third last year.
Ceferin cited the need for new leadership and the strain on his family after being away for seven years.
The English FA, attempting a separate vote, opposed the term limit amendment, but only Iceland and Norway supported, marking the proposal’s failure.
Zvonimir Boban resigned in protest last month.
