Katalin Novak, Hungary’s first female president, resigned amid widespread criticism for pardoning a man convicted of obstructing justice in a case involving sexual abuse in a children’s home.
Last week, it was disclosed that the president had granted clemency to an individual who pressured children to withdraw sexual abuse allegations against a state-run children’s home director.
The public outcry led to demands for both her and former Justice Minister Judit Varga to step down, and they both resigned on Saturday, February 10.
Today I resigned from my office as President of Hungary. Thank you for everything to all my friends in all four corners of the world. Hungary is a wonderful country with marvelous people, a good partner, an even better friend and a reliable ally. I am glad that in the past… pic.twitter.com/j4SdiezAkK
