The House of Representatives narrowly voted 214-213 on Tuesday night to impeach Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas.
Following last week’s failed attempt, House Republicans revived the impeachment articles, blaming Mayorkas for the border crisis.
The accusation centers on his alleged violation of immigration and border security laws, leading to millions of illegal entries.
President Biden urged Republicans to collaborate on border security instead of engaging in what he termed “political stunts.”
The president defended Mayorkas, emphasizing his decades-long public service.
Notably, the last cabinet secretary to be impeached was War Secretary William Belknap in 1876.
In FY2023, over 3.2 million migrants were encountered at the border, with a record 300,000 encounters in December alone.
Utah Congressman Blake Moore switched his vote last week, and the impeachment resolution was reintroduced.
