Ministers from Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger gathered in Burkina’s capital to discuss the formation of a confederation, building upon the Alliance of Sahel States established by their military governments in September.
Burkina’s Defence Minister emphasized the importance of advancing the implementation of instruments and legal structures for the confederation during the meetings in Ouagadougou.
The goal is to enhance the efficiency of their alliance, pleasing the populations of the three countries.
Additionally, there is a long-term aspiration to unite these West African neighbors within a federation, supported by the foreign ministers in a December meeting in Bamako.
Notably, the possibility of a common currency is seen as a potential “way out” of “colonization,” according to Niger’s military leader.
This development follows their recent exit from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), with accusations against France for manipulating ECOWAS.
The new military leaders have redirected their focus towards Moscow, emphasizing a desire for true fraternity without external interference.
The decision to withdraw from ECOWAS is deemed irreversible, with criticism that ECOWAS has deviated from its primary objective of serving the people.
