A Kenyan runner, Charles Kipsang Kipkorir, collapsed and died of a suspected heart attack at the finish of Africa’s oldest international athletic competition, the Cameroon mountain race.
Despite leading the race, Kipkorir experienced a malaise moments before the finish, ultimately collapsing after collecting his prize.
He was rushed to the hospital but succumbed minutes later.
The governor, Bernard Okalai Bilia, expressed sorrow, stating it is a significant loss for the African athletic community, Kenya, and Cameroon.
The challenging Race of Hope, held in Buea, involved over 600 runners from various countries, navigating a rugged terrain over 4,100 meters above sea level.
