Local and security sources reported on Monday that a significant number of Muslims were killed in an assault on a mosque in Natiaboani, eastern Burkina Faso.
The attack occurred around 5:00 am on Sunday, coinciding with another tragic incident targeting Catholics during mass.
The assailants, described as armed individuals, surrounded the mosque during morning prayers, resulting in the deaths of several dozen Muslim worshipers, mostly men.
The terrorists also targeted soldiers and members of the Volunteers for the Defence of the Fatherland, causing substantial damage in what is characterized as a large-scale attack.
Natiaboani, situated about 60 kilometers south of Fada N’Gourma, has witnessed recurrent attacks by armed groups since 2018.
On the same day, in northern Burkina Faso’s Essakane village, at least 15 civilians were killed and two others injured during an attack on a Catholic church during Sunday mass. Jean-Pierre Sawadogo, vicar of the Dori diocese, labeled it a “terrorist attack,” noting that it occurred in the “three borders” zone near Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger.
