On Tuesday in Moscow, Vasily Dubkov, the lawyer who represented the late opposition politician Alexei Navalny, was arrested for “violating public order,” according to Russian news outlet Novaya Gazeta.
Mr. Navalny, a vocal critic of President Vladimir Putin, unexpectedly passed away in an Arctic penal colony on February 16.
Vasily Dubkov, who accompanied Navalny’s mother to collect her son’s body, has been detained, although Russian authorities have not officially confirmed his arrest.
The death of Navalny led to spontaneous memorials across Russia, and authorities are detaining individuals to suppress sympathetic gatherings ahead of the upcoming presidential election.
Yulia Navalnaya, Navalny’s widow, has accused Putin of her husband’s death and criticized the delay in releasing his body.
