In Delhi, India, doctors at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital conducted the city’s inaugural bilateral hand transplant on a 45-year-old painter, Raj Kumar, who lost both hands in a train accident.
The 12-hour procedure involved securing bones and connecting muscles, arteries, and nerves from donor Meena Mehta, a former school administrator declared brain dead.
Following six weeks of recovery, Kumar, who lost his hands in October 2020, was discharged.
The hospital, granted permission for hand transplants in February 2023, emphasizes the need for lifelong immunosuppressants for Kumar and anticipates sensory experiences in six to seven months.
