Haiti’s political landscape is tumultuous following Prime Minister Ariel Henry’s announcement of his resignation upon the establishment of a transitional presidential council.
This move has opened the door for influential gang leaders to vie for power in a country plagued by gang violence, with control over 80% of the capital.
One such figure is Jimmy Chérizier, also known as “Barbecue,” who leads the G9 Family and Allies faction.
Chérizier has orchestrated violent attacks against government targets, pressuring Henry into stepping down.
Despite international efforts to address Haiti’s crisis, including the proposal for a transitional council, Chérizier rejects external intervention, warning of further chaos.
The composition of the transitional council, which aims to appoint an interim prime minister, includes representatives from political parties, civil society groups, and the private sector.
Henry’s resignation came after urgent discussions among Caribbean leaders and US officials, highlighting the severity of Haiti’s situation.
With the country gripped by violence and instability, the path forward remains uncertain, with the gangs holding significant sway over the capital and its future governance.
