The inaugural flight departing from Haiti in two weeks arrived at Miami International Airport on Sunday afternoon, as revealed by a source to CBS News Miami.
The Global X charter flight from Cap-Haïtien landed at 2:30 p.m. with 47 passengers on board, all U.S. citizens seeking refuge from the turmoil.
These passengers learned about the U.S.-sponsored flight through an email notification and the State Department’s website.
Confirming the flight’s arrival, the State Department assured that government officials were assisting passengers with their “next steps.”
A department spokesperson emphasized their commitment to aiding U.S. citizens amidst the absence of commercial travel options and when security conditions allow.
The State Department disclosed ongoing communication with other U.S. citizens seeking departure from Haiti, exploring potential exit strategies from Port-au-Prince.
However, the capital’s precarious situation, with gangs almost seizing control, has led to nearly a million residents being confined to their homes due to incessant gunfire and fears of violence and starvation.
Relief efforts have dwindled due to the escalating violence.
