Russian President Vladimir Putin condemned the music hall attack, which claimed over 110 lives, as a “barbaric terrorist act” and vowed strong retaliation against the perpetrators.
In his televised address, Putin announced the capture of all four gunmen before they could escape into Ukraine.
He expressed condolences for the innocent victims and emphasized that the culprits had been apprehended en route to Ukraine.
The Russian FSB had previously stated that the attackers were in contact with individuals in Ukraine as they tried to flee.
Despite the Islamic State group claiming responsibility, Russian officials did not acknowledge their involvement.
Putin declared Sunday a national day of mourning and warned that the terrorists would face severe consequences.
