Zimbabwe’s Reserve Bank Governor, John Mushayavanhu, announced the introduction of a new currency called ZiG (Zimbabwe Gold) during the 2024 Monetary Policy Statement presentation on April 5, 2024.

The ZiG notes will be issued in denominations of 1, 2, 5, 10, 50, and 100, with corresponding coins for half and quarter ZiG.

Mushayavanhu stated that effective immediately, banks will convert existing Zimbabwe dollar balances into ZiG.

Zimbabweans have a 21-day window to exchange their ZWL notes for ZiG currency.

Mushayavanhu emphasized that the new ZiG currency will coexist with other currencies in the country’s monetary basket.

The conversion rate for Zimbabwe dollar balances to ZiG will be based on the interbank rate of April 5, 2024.

Starting Monday, individuals holding Zimbabwe dollar notes are advised to deposit them in banks.

Notably, those possessing ZWL$100,000 or more in notes must provide explanations regarding the source and purpose of holding such amounts.

Trump doubles steel tariffs to 50% in major policy move President Donald Trump announced on Friday that he would raise tariffs on steel imports to 50%, doubling the current 25% rate. Speaking at a US Steel plant in West Mifflin, Pennsylvania, Trump described the move as a “major announcement” aimed at protecting American steelworkers. He explained that while he initially considered a 40% tariff, industry leaders pushed for 50%, saying the lower rate was easier to bypass. The new tariff is set to take effect on Wednesday, June 4. Trump praised the tariffs for reviving the US steel industry, warning that without them, American steel production would have vanished and factories shuttered. However, higher tariffs could increase costs for construction and manufacturing, industries Trump has sought to support. Since the initial 25% tariff imposed in March, domestic steel prices have risen due to reduced foreign competition. Using national security powers under Section 232, Trump justified the increased tariffs. The US imported $31.3 billion in iron and steel last year, with Canada being the largest supplier. Trump also highlighted his approval of Japan’s Nippon Steel acquiring a controlling interest in US Steel—a deal he initially opposed but ultimately accepted after safeguards were added, including a “golden share” allowing US oversight. Trump celebrated these actions as significant wins for steelworkers, calling the day “one of the biggest” in their lives, and invited workers onstage to join in the celebration.
