Two individuals have reportedly fallen into the Lagos lagoon following a commercial vehicle mishap on the recently reopened Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos.
The incident occurred around 11 am on Wednesday when the vehicle’s brakes failed near Adeniji Adele on its way to Lagos Island, resulting in serious injuries to other passengers due to the vehicle’s high speed.
Emergency response teams, including marine police, conducted a search for the two adults involved. The injured passengers have been transported to General Hospital, Lagos Island.
According to Olatunde Akinsanya, the Director of Operations at Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), the accident involved an LT commercial bus carrying 22 passengers.
Reportedly traveling at high speed, the bus collided with the bridge’s barrier, causing passengers to fall into the lagoon.
NEMA’s Lagos Territorial Coordinator, Mr. Ibrahim Farinloye, confirmed that the driver’s high speed led to the accident, resulting in two passengers being thrown into the lagoon.
The Marine Police are currently searching for the victims, and there is no report of their rescue at this time.
The Third Mainland Bridge recently reopened after repairs on April 4.
The Lagos Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) had warned motorists against overspeeding following an earlier accident on the bridge post-repairs.
Speed limit signs have been strategically placed to ensure compliance with safety regulations.
