A 1,500-kilogram bomb was reported to have landed on a Russian-controlled village in Ukraine’s Donetsk region but did not explode, according to new footage circulating on social media.
The incident occurred in Yenakiieve, a town in territory annexed by Russia, though not fully under its control.
This comes amid ongoing aerial assaults by Russian aircraft using modified weapons.
In March, Ukraine’s foreign minister Dmytro Kuleba stated that Russia had dropped 700 guided bombs on Ukrainian territory within a single week.
Throughout Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine starting in February 2022, there have been instances where Russian attacks inadvertently hit areas under Moscow’s control and even within Russia’s internationally recognized borders.
The FAB series of bombs, originally Soviet-era weapons like the FAB-250 and FAB-500, have been upgraded with guidance kits to become precision bombs.
Recently, the FAB-1500, described as a devastating weapon, has been more widely deployed by Russian jets in the conflict.
Ukrainian officials emphasized the importance of countering these heavy bombs by targeting the aircraft launching them.
Ukrainian air force officials have also expressed concerns that Russia is converting FAB-500 bombs into cruise missile-like weapons, extending their range beyond the reach of Ukrainian air-defense systems.
This development raises alarms about potential mass use of larger bombs in the conflict.
