Nigeria’s chess champion, Tunde Onakoya, broke the Guinness World Record for the longest marathon chess session, lasting an impressive 60 hours straight at Time Square in New York.
Supported by his foundation, Chess in Slums Africa, Onakoya raised over $130,000 from 1,500 donors, with each contributing an average of $80. The funds will support education initiatives across Africa.
During the event, donors had memorable interactions, receiving signed chess boards from Onakoya and his partners. Some special edition boards signed by renowned players were offered for $5,000 and $1,000 each.
Onakoya’s accomplishment surpassed his initial goal of raising $1 million for charity. He eclipsed the previous record of 56 hours, 9 minutes, and 37 seconds set in 2018.
Chess legend Shawn Martinez joined Onakoya 23 hours into the game, adding significance to the event.
In a statement, Chess in Slums Africa highlighted the challenge involving Onakoya and Martinez, both National Masters, and emphasized the teamwork required for the record attempt.
The achievement underscores Onakoya’s dedication to promoting chess and education in Africa.
