Several buildings at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities are being closed amid student protests over Israel’s actions in Gaza. The closure affects buildings along Northrop Mall on the East Bank, with some transitioning to restricted access.
In response to ongoing demonstrations, university officials have decided to close several key buildings, including Coffman Union, Weisman Museum, Hasselmo Hall, Ford Hall, Vincent Murphy Hall, Tate Lab, Morrill Hall, Northrop Auditorium, Johnston Hall, Walter Library, Smith Hall, and Kolthoff Hall effective from 2 p.m. onwards.
Protesters have gathered outside Northrop Auditorium, with further demonstrations expected in the coming days. The university has affirmed its support for freedom of expression and the right to peaceful protest.
The University of Minnesota’s Council of Graduate Students (COGS) criticized the short notice given for the building closures, calling it unacceptable and an attempt to stifle free speech and demonstration.
The council denounced the university’s actions as an attack on fundamental freedoms and academic principles. Protesters are demanding divestment from businesses linked to the Israeli military.
Similar protests have taken place at other universities, including Hamline University, reflecting broader concerns over the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
