A section of an expressway in China’s Guangdong province collapsed due to heavy rain, causing 36 fatalities and injuring 30 others, as reported by official media on Thursday.
The collapse occurred early Wednesday on the Meizhou-Dabu Expressway, with a 17.9-meter section giving way and leading 23 vehicles to plunge.
Meizhou, part of Guangdong, has been heavily affected by rain and hail since last April, resulting in mudslides, flooded homes, and damaged bridges.
President Xi Jinping has urged extensive efforts to save lives and address risks amid ongoing rainy weather in the region.
Rescue task forces from central and local governments have been mobilized for the operations.
