Ukrainian weightlifter Oleksandr Pielieshenko, known for his achievements in the sport, tragically passed away while engaged in the Russia-Ukraine conflict, as confirmed by the Ukrainian Weightlifting Federation.
Pielieshenko, who represented Ukraine in the 2016 Summer Olympics, was 30 years old.
In a statement released on Monday, the federation expressed deep sorrow at the loss of Oleksandr Pielieshenko, describing him as a distinguished athlete and two-time European weightlifting champion. They extended their heartfelt condolences to his family and all who knew him.
According to the Ukrainian Olympic Committee, Pielieshenko enlisted in the armed forces early in the conflict.
During his weightlifting career, Pielieshenko achieved significant success, winning European titles in the 85-kilogram weight class in 2016 and 2017.
He also competed in the Rio Olympics in 2016, finishing fourth in his weight category.
Despite his athletic prowess, Pielieshenko faced challenges with doping violations, resulting in suspensions from competition by the International Weightlifting Federation.
