Rather than taking a hardline approach that often led to confrontations and arrests, some universities, like the University of Minnesota, have opted to negotiate with demonstrators, resulting in agreements that calm tensions.
Recently, Northwestern University, Brown University, Rutgers University, and others have also reached agreements to end protests peacefully.
Under these agreements, demonstrators agreed to cease disruptions during finals and commencement ceremonies.
The University of Minnesota’s deal included commitments to establish relationships with Palestinian universities, enhance transparency regarding investments, and improve engagement with Palestinian students.
Despite some unresolved issues, such as divestment demands, the agreements have been hailed by supporters like Rep. Ilhan Omar, while universities continue to navigate complex issues related to free speech and political activism on campus.
