Six persons have tragically lost their lives, and 48 others are currently missing following the collapse of a multi-story building in George, South Africa.
The incident occurred on Monday afternoon in the Western Cape province, with rescue efforts ongoing. Since the collapse, 26 persons have been successfully rescued from the rubble.
According to the George Municipality, three separate rescue teams are actively engaged in the operation at different sections of the collapse site.
The rescue operation is anticipated to continue for four to five days, with 111 emergency responders involved in the effort, as confirmed by the Western Cape Government on Tuesday.
President Cyril Ramaphosa expressed his condolences to the affected families in a statement from his office, acknowledging the families of those who lost their lives and the nearly 50 individuals still trapped under debris.
Ramaphosa also emphasized the need for an investigation into the cause of the collapse to provide closure to the community and prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.
