Nigerian athlete Tobi Amusan has claimed the title of the fastest woman in the women’s 100m hurdles for the year.
She achieved this feat by sprinting to victory in 12.40 seconds at the inaugural Jamaica Athletics Invitational held in Kingston.
In an impressive display, Amusan overtook Jamaican and reigning world champion Danielle Williams in the final stretch of the race.
During the event, Amusan initially trailed behind Williams and American athlete Nia Ali but surged ahead towards the finish line, surpassing the previous world-leading time of 12.42 seconds set by Tonea Marshall of the USA on April 20.
Williams secured second place with a time of 12.46 seconds, followed by Christina Clemens of the USA in third place with 12.54 seconds.
Jamaican athlete Yanique Thompson finished fourth with a time of 12.59 seconds, and Nia Ali took fifth place with a time of 12.65 seconds.
It was reported that Amusan and several other notable athletes opted to participate in the Jamaica Invitational over the Doha Diamond League.
Amusan’s recent victory is particularly notable following her three consecutive wins at the Diamond League in Eugene, Oregon, which served as a comeback from her fifth-place finish at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest, where she lost the title to Williams.
