The House of Representatives Committee on Interior has announced plans to launch an investigation into irregularities observed in the issuance of international passports and the utilization of resident permits in Nigeria.
Ahmed Abdullahi, the Committee Chairman, disclosed this during an interactive session with the management of IRIS smart technology and Continental Transfer Technique.
Abdullahi, represented by Vice Chairman Hon. Ganiyu Adele, emphasized that the probe aims to identify any deficiencies or anomalies in the system and implement necessary reforms to enhance efficiency.
The investigation is crucial for maintaining the credibility of immigration processes and ensuring fair treatment for citizens and residents.
Additionally, the committee intends to scrutinize the expatriate quota as part of its statutory responsibilities.
Concerns were raised about the lack of accurate data on expatriate residents in Nigeria, highlighting the need for transparency and accountability in immigration procedures.
To uphold international best practices, the committee requested detailed information from managing directors of relevant companies regarding agreements and contracts with the Federal Government.
The committee expressed disappointment at the absence of certain managing directors during the hearing, warning against disregard for parliamentary proceedings in the future.
The House Committee on Interior is committed to addressing systemic flaws and promoting integrity in immigration procedures to benefit all stakeholders through transparency and accountability.
