A delegation from the Liberian government is scheduled to arrive in Ghana on Monday, May 12, 2024, to begin the process of repatriating 4,323 stranded Liberians affected by the demolition of the Buduburam Camp.
The delegation includes officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Liberia Refugees Repatriation Resettlement Commission (LRRRC), Ministry of Information Cultural Affairs and Tourism, Ministry of Gender Children and Social Protection, and the Liberia Broadcasting Corporation.
Patrick T. Worzie, the Executive Director of LRRRC, expressed appreciation to Ghana for their cooperation in facilitating the repatriation process.
He emphasized the importance of ensuring the safe and dignified return of Liberians, enabling them to contribute to Liberia’s development.
Worzie also thanked the government of Ivory Coast for allowing passage through their borders for the stranded Liberians’ return journey.
Upon arrival, the repatriated Liberians will be temporarily accommodated in phases at the Regional Transit Center in CARI, Bong County, where they will receive counseling before reintegrating into their communities.
The stranded individuals have been residents of Buduburam Camp since the 1990 civil crisis and will return to one hundred host communities across thirteen counties in Liberia.
The Liberian government, through LRRRC, is appealing to humanitarian organizations and local and international NGOs to support the repatriation process and ensure a smooth transition for the returning citizens.
