A 71-year-old man from Levice is facing accusations of attempting to murder Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico in a politically motivated shooting.
The incident occurred in Handlova on Wednesday, May 15, as Fico was leaving a government meeting. Despite the suspect not being officially named, local sources suggest his involvement in the attack.
In viral footage from central Slovakia, security agents can be seen assisting a wounded Fico and swiftly escorting him into a black car, which then sped away. Simultaneously, police officers were seen apprehending an individual on the pavement believed to be the attacker.
The suspected assailant, described as a writer and political activist in local media, has been captured in circulating videos expressing discontent with government policies, particularly toward state media. He could face a potential life sentence if found guilty.
Interior Minister Matus Sutaj Estok addressed reporters, stating that the suspect acted independently and had previously participated in anti-government protests.
Mr. Fico, aged 59, is reported to be in stable condition after undergoing critical medical procedures following the attack.
The incident has garnered widespread condemnation from world leaders including US President Joe Biden, UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, French President Emmanuel Macron, and the European Union.
The attack has raised concerns about political tensions and the safety of leaders, with investigations ongoing to determine the motive behind the incident amidst debates over government policies and democratic principles.
