A 19-year-old, upset over his upbringing, attempted to kill his parents just hours after Mother’s Day, but was disappointed when both survived the attack he had allegedly planned for years.
Jeremiah Estel Blair reportedly shot his parents inside their Chandler home, about 20 miles from Phoenix, on Monday morning, May 13, according to police.
His parents were rushed to the hospital and treated for their wounds.
Blair was arrested at the scene without incident and admitted to the shooting, according to reports. He expressed dissatisfaction with his childhood.
“Blair reported being upset over his upbringing and he felt he was not treated as he should have been as a child,” Chandler police detectives wrote.
“Blair stated he had been planning for years to kill the victims.”
Initially, Blair had planned to carry out the shooting on Mother’s Day itself, but instead waited until later that morning, court documents said.
According to AZ Family, when Blair’s father came downstairs around 5:30 a.m., Blair was waiting with a gun and video camera to record the shooting.
Blair told his father about “this day coming” before shooting him in the forearm, court documents outlined, as reported by the Arizona Republic.
Blair’s father managed to run back to the bedroom, but his mother came out to see what was happening and was shot in the chest, the outlet reported.
While Blair initially thought his mother might not survive, he showed remorse when he learned both parents were likely to live, the court documents alleged.
“Defendant showed remorse for the fact that his parents will live,” court documents stated.
“Defendant knew his actions were wrong, but still attempted to shoot and kill his parents.”
Blair is facing two counts of first-degree attempted murder and remains in custody, police said.
