The Bishop of Aberdeen and Orkney, Anne Dyer, will face a disciplinary tribunal by the Scottish Episcopal Church over three complaints alleging behavior that could harm the Church’s reputation.
Bishop Dyer, Scotland’s first female bishop, has faced challenges since assuming her role in 2018, including what she described as significant bullying and harassment. She was suspended in 2022.
A spokesperson for Bishop Dyer stated that several complaints have already been dismissed and expressed confidence in proving her innocence.
The decision to proceed to a tribunal was made by the church’s Procurator, Paul Reid KC, after reviewing multiple complaints.
The Scottish Episcopal Church confirmed that the complaints were referred to its Procurator following an investigation by its Preliminary Proceedings Committee (PPC). Bishop Dyer has been formally notified of this decision.
The tribunal hearing is scheduled for September in Edinburgh, and Bishop Dyer has one month to respond to the accusations.
The spokesperson for Bishop Dyer added, “In relation to the remaining complaints, Bishop Anne is confident that, once all the facts are presented, she will have clearly established her innocence as well as the motivation of the small group of individuals who have campaigned against her.”
