Grammy winner and American Idol alum Mandisa Hundley, known professionally as Mandisa, passed away at her home in Nashville on April 18 at the age of 47 due to complications from class III obesity, according to reports relased by People.
Police reported no signs of suspicious or criminal activity in her death.
Class III obesity, previously called morbid obesity, is defined by the Cleveland Clinic as having a body mass index (BMI) of 40 or higher, or a BMI of 35 or higher with obesity-related health issues.
Mandisa’s death was classified as natural, People confirmed.
Originally from California, Mandisa gained national attention during season five of “American Idol,” where she placed in the top 9.
She released her debut album, “True Beauty,” in 2007, and her album “Overcomer” won the Grammy for Best Contemporary Christian Music Album.
Throughout her career, Mandisa released five full-length albums and a Christmas LP.
In 2022, she published a memoir titled “Out of the Dark: My Journey Through the Shadows to Find God’s Joy,” detailing her struggles with depression and weight.
